The Virginia Tech shootings in 2007 underscored the importance of timely notifications in the event of an on-campus incident. The university is appealing a $50,000 fine levied by the US Department of Education in March for a two-hour delay in alerting the campus community, a violation of The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
